If Windows says “Windows protected your PC”

This blue box is Microsoft SmartScreen. It appears for programs it has not seen many times yet, even when they are properly signed. Here is how to check that your copy of Brightfix is genuine before you run it.

Check the publisher, then run it

  1. In the blue box, click More info.
  2. Look at the line that says Publisher. It should say Speedforce Industries LLC.
  3. If it does, click Run anyway.
  4. Windows then asks for permission to make changes. The publisher shown there should also be Speedforce Industries LLC.

If it says Unknown publisher, do not run it. Delete the file and download Brightfix again from getbrightfix.com.

Check the file yourself

  1. Right-click the setup file and choose Properties.
  2. Open the Digital Signatures tab. The signer should be Speedforce Industries LLC.
  3. For extra certainty, open PowerShell in the folder with the file and run Get-FileHash .\Brightfix-Setup-*.exe. Compare the result with the SHA-256 shown on the Download page.

Why it happens

SmartScreen builds trust per program as more people install it. A new version of a small company’s app can show this box for a while, then it stops. Brightfix is signed through Microsoft’s own signing service, and the signature is what tells you the file has not been changed.

Never install Brightfix from

  • An email attachment or a link someone sent you.
  • Someone on the phone, or a pop up that says your PC is infected.
  • Any site other than getbrightfix.com.
